ANC women delegates focus on empowerment

The gender commission at the ANC policy conference adopted that a gender summit must be implemented to look at power sharing between men and women. This summit will engage women at all levels.  Today is the last day of the ANC’s national policy conference taking place at Gallagher Estate in Midrand, Johannesburg.

The proposal for a summit came about after it was found that there is not enough women representation in top positions within the organization. Instead women tend to be placed in deputy positions.

During deliberations on the gender commission the ANC women delegates were also vociferous on issues including security, land and empowerment.

With regards to security, ANC Women’s League Treasurer General Hlengiwe Mkhize said that “mobile police stations must be implemented and be visible in rural areas and informal settlements”. This to ensure that there is police visibility in areas, they are able to deal with gender violence and have the ability to handle rape cases in a sensitive way. The motion that gay and lesbian rights be recognized and protected was applauded.

 

 

Women who work on land must be capacitated properly

 

“Women who work on land must be capacitated properly to feed their families,” said Gaunteng’s Women’s League chair Patricia Chueu.

“Give these women a chance, give them land, give them training to use their hands and feed the nation,” Chueu added.
